Much of my childhood was spent drawing and pursuing art and music, encouraged by my dad Jim, who was at one time a professional portrait painter before opening his own gallery in Victoria in the 1970s.
After finishing a degree in Fine Art in Canterbury in the mid 90s, I spent a number of years making art full time, exhibiting widely in many galleries and exhibitions across the UK and New York. I stopped in 2007 though as my attempts at trying to earn a living resulted in producing inauthentic work I thought would be commercial, rather than being true to myself and doing work I really believed in.
Since then, although I’m now better known for my idiosyncratic musical explorations as one-man band LC Pumpkin, I’ve still been quietly pursuing my art behind closed doors, and it’s only now after 19 years I’ve decided to once again show my work in public.
Always somewhat out of step with what’s trending, my work seems even more at odds with the mainstream than it did back in the early 2000s. While we find ourselves in an increasingly fast paced, synthetic, screen-based world which values impatient instant gratification, novelty and distraction from our physical surroundings, my work is about none of that - it’s slow, detailed, contemplative and, more often than not, takes a long time to do. I hope it acts as encouragement to observe, feel and connect with our surroundings more.
And as well as all the serious stuff, I also hope people get a sense of the playfulness I have when producing the work as, in the end, making art is often just simply a lot of fun.
